Imago Relationship Therapy is a structured approach to couples counselling that helps partners understand the deeper patterns beneath recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, and misunderstanding.
Rather than focusing only on the argument itself, Imago helps couples slow things down, explore what may be happening underneath the conflict, and learn new ways to speak, listen, and respond with greater understanding and emotional safety.
Imago Relationship Therapy was developed by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt. The approach explores how early experiences, attachment needs, relationship expectations, and protective patterns can influence the way partners experience one another in adult relationships.
Imago does not treat differences between partners as evidence that the relationship is necessarily wrong. Instead, couples are encouraged to become curious about those differences and understand the experiences, needs, and vulnerabilities that may be underneath them.
Structured dialogue helps couples move away from rapid reactions, criticism, correction, and defensiveness.
Partners practice listening without immediately arguing their own position, allowing each person’s experience to be understood more fully.
Greater understanding can help difficult conversations feel safer and support more empathy, curiosity, and respect between partners.

A central part of Imago Relationship Therapy is the structured Couples Dialogue. Rather than allowing a difficult conversation to unfold in the same familiar way, partners are guided through a process of listening, reflecting, validating, and responding with empathy.
The purpose is not to force agreement. Two people can experience the same relationship very differently. The goal is to make enough room for both experiences to be heard and understood without immediately moving into defensiveness or debate.
Anaka completed the intensive 96-hour Imago Relationship Therapy clinical training, delivered over 12 training days across three weekends beginning in 2007.
Certification required additional clinical work beyond the initial training, including recorded couples sessions that were reviewed under supervision. After completing these post-training requirements, Anaka earned certification as a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist in 2011.
This specialized training and supervised clinical process provided Anaka with an in-depth framework for helping couples & individuals understand recurring relationship patterns, communicate difficult experiences more safely, and develop greater mutual understanding.

If you and your partner are caught in patterns that keep repeating, couples counselling can provide a structured place to understand what is happening and begin relating differently.
Anaka integrates Imago principles into couples counselling while tailoring the work to the needs and circumstances of each relationship.
Imago may be used as part of counselling for recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, intimacy concerns, trust difficulties, betrayal recovery, and rebuilding after difficult relationship experiences.
